MASSACHUSETTS ENACTS NEW LEAVE REQUIREMENTS FOR VETERANS DAY AND MEMORIAL DAY

September, 2016

Massachusetts now requires all employers to provide time off to any employee who is a veteran and who wants to participate in a Veterans Day or Memorial Day exercise, parade or service. Although the required time off is generally unpaid, the new law requires that employers with 50 or more employees must provide time off on Veterans Day with pay “if the employee provides reasonable notice for such leave.” Employers should incorporate this new requirement into their time off practices and, if necessary, update handbook policies to reflect the availability of this time off.
